Unix Engineer required to manage and own the Unix estate for this North West based Organisation.
The Unix estate currently sits at 125 servers and is managed by an outsourced offshore third party. The organisation wants an experienced Unix engineer to take ownership of this estate, proactively managed the estate, assess risks/issues, recommend solutions and then work towards stabilising and delivering on their recommendations, supported by the Head of Infrastructure.
As the Unix engineer successful applicant will possess a strong background in Unix administration, good knowledge of Sun Solaris 10 administration, experience of managing 24/7 high volume systems and experience of supporting high availability systems including clusters and replicated systems.
As the Unix Engineer you will be capable of working within a structured organisation with strict adherence to design / change control processes, the engineer would act as a Subject Mater Expert for the Unix Estate including Solaris, RHEL and AIX.
This includes fault diagnosis and deep dive performance tuning / enhancement to ensure services are running reliably and efficiently. Knowledge / experience of any backup and storage solutions would be an advantage.
Ideally, candidates should have as much of the following experience as possible, with Solaris being key:
• Systems Administration of Solaris 10
• Solaris Zones and LDOMs
• Solaris Clustering
• ZFS and zpools
• Solaris Boot environments
• Sun/Oracle SPARC based hardware
• Disaster recovery design, planning and testing
• Providing 3rd line support, to critical incidents
• RHEL configuration and administration
• Veritas NetBackup
You will have the opportunity to add to your technical skill set as they also operate with Solaris 11, Storage and a Wintel estate along with a broad range of networking technologies and skills and is an enterprise estate.
As well as technical ability, you must have strong communication skills and the ability to work cross department and help drive the technology area forward as part of a larger infrastructure team.
